COMMUNITY

Dos Palos is located in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley near the geographic center of California. Dos Palos is approximately halfway between San Jose and Fresno or halfway between Monterey and Fresno. The District transcends both Merced and Fresno County boundaries; however, the majority of governmental business takes place in Merced County. Dos Palos' Central California location allows easy freeway access to both winter and summer recreational areas. Yosemite National Park, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Cruz, Monterey and Lake Tahoe are all within reasonable driving distance.

The district serves a population base of approximately 8,000. The mild climate supports a flourishing agricultural economy of dairy, cotton, rice, sugar beets, tomatoes, and other leading commodities.

Several colleges and universities are located within a one hour drive, including Merced College, California State Universities in Fresno and Turlock (Stanislaus), and Fresno Pacific University. In addition, other universities offer educational programs within the county.

The county seat located in Merced offers most governmental, professional, and commercial services. The community of Dos Palos includes a hospital, doctors, dentists, optometrist, shopping areas, many churches, and recreational facilities, including a teen activities center, several parks, sports activity leagues for adults and children and a swimming pool. Surrounding recreational areas include the San Luis Reservoir and O'Neill Fore bay  for fishing, windsurfing, jet skiing, and other water sports and National and State Wildlife Refuges for viewing, hunting and other outdoor activities.

Bryant Middle School (6-8)

Westside High School (Continuation)

Dos Palos - Oro Loma is proud to have community centered schools. The schools are firmly involved in community activities and the community strongly supports the local schools and programs.

Through the use of the latest technology, including strong computer components at each school site, it is the goal of the Dos Palos - Oro Loma Joint Unified School District to enhance a well rounded, up-to-date curriculum that will meet the needs of all students and the community. HOUSING

There is very affordable rental housing within and around the Dos Palos city boundaries. There is also very reasonable housing purchase prices in Dos Palos and within close commuting distances. Merced County boasts some of the most affordable home prices in the state of California and depending on the location and type of housing desired, homes can be found in Dos Palos and surrounding communities ranging in price from $75,000 to $175,000.

Dos Palos - Oro Loma currently has a certificated staff of approximately 140. The District takes pride in its exceptional special education program, including two speech therapists, a nurse, four counselors, and three psychologists. We seek qualified regular and special education professionals willing to add their expertise to the District's mission of educating children of all learning styles and backgrounds.

DISTRICT SUPPORT

The Dos Palos - Oro Loma Joint Unified School District believes that continued professional growth is essential to all employees; consequently, we actively support staff development, the Mentor Teacher program, in services, and cooperative ventures with local universities. Dos Palos participates in CSU, Stanislaus' interactive, televised satellite courses. The Learning Project is a unique staff development model we are extremely fortunate to support. The District integrates full time, on staff master teachers to provide continual support and guidance in teaching methodologies and strategies to our faculty. We continue to investigate unique methods of involving our district with innovative professional development opportunities.
