Grades 9,10,11,12

Prerequisites: N/A

Course Description: Art I: Art Appreciation provides art experiences for those with an interest in art and also satisfies the state graduation requirement for a fine art.  The curriculum is broad and challenging centering on the elements and principles of design and the exploration of many art media.

Artistic Perception: Students complete assignments that require them to process analyze and respond to sensory information.  Students obtain vocabulary from the language of the visual arts as homework.  They are evaluated by their ability to use vocabulary words properly when writing in the evaluation process of assignments.  Group assignments have a written element where students convey significant messages including the language of the visual arts. Assessment is facilitated by the language arts scoring guide for a written work and the proper use of the vocabulary of the visual arts.

Creative Expression: Students create original works of art in many media.  Assignments may include tempera paint, ceramic clay, plaster, printmaking, basket making and digital media.  Students self evaluate their work by discussing or writing their responses, using appropriate visual arts vocabulary.  Assessment is guided by a rubric that includes the categories of craftsmanship, creativity (synthesis, hypothesizing and inferring are used in decision making), participation and communication (metaphor, analogy, personal symbolism and the use of the elements principals and of art are used in the completed work). The scoring guide is aligned with the California State Visual Arts Standards.

Historical and Cultural Context: Students gain understanding of historical contributions and cultural dimensions of art.  Curriculum includes assignments where students choose a famous artwork to emulate for a poster design.  Students create works of art in a style such as pop art.  They write about the historical influences leading to the art style and their use of color theory.  Evaluation is based on a scoring guide aligned with the California State Visual Arts Standards.

Aesthetic Valuing: Students make critical judgments about and determine the quality of visual artworks.  Students are asked to self evaluate their artwork in terms of aesthetics.  When creating with earthen clay students are asked to judge their work in terms of symmetry and if a pattern has been developed that fits the overall theme of the piece.  Their work is compared to work of accomplished artists in the same medium. Evaluation is based on a scoring guide aligned with the California State Visual Arts Standards.

Connections, Relations, Applications: Students connect and apply what is learned in each art form to learning in other art forms, subject areas and careers.  As examples: Students use like terms in math and art such as ratio and isometric perspective.  Students use virtual texture in video and digital presentations applying knowledge learned about texture in other lessons. Evaluation is based a rubric aligned with the California State Visual Arts Standards, assignment specific scoring guides and observation.
