For each grading period, every student must keep an average grade equivalent to a "C" (meeting benchmark) for all benchmarks. Students not achieving a 70% average of all benchmarks at the grading period will receive a failing to meet benchmarks grade "F".

Benchmarks are: Language& skills: responding to sensory information, Creating in the visual arts, Understanding historical/cultural dimensions, Making judgments about art work, and Connecting and applying to art forms/other subject areas.

Each assignment, scoring guide specifies student activities and outcomes for reaching the benchmark. Each student is given the responsibility to exceed the benchmark. Equivalent grades are "B" proficient and "A" exemplary.

Demonstrations of higher level thinking in four areas contribute to the proficient and exemplary levels.  The criteria are craftsmanship, participation, and benchmark.  A rubric identifies the levels, above benchmark, in each area.  The benchmark category is weighted 75% while craftsmanship, and participation are averaged for 25% of the grade.
