COVID Updates- January 24, 2022
California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has determined that the following changes are possible because schools have a multi-layered approach to COVID-19 mitigation practices and have curbed in-school transmission to date. These other layers- such as receiving COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters, wearing high-quality well-fitting masks, staying home, and testing if symptomatic- remain crucial to school-based mitigation efforts.
We recognize that in previous weeks the state guidance has changed and shifted multiple times. We understand that this may be confusing. To help support our families and staff the guidance below outlines the current mandates to be in effect starting January 24, 2022.
Updates to Isolation: Applies to students and staff
- If student/staff tests Positive for COVID-19 (regardless of vaccination status):
- If positive, notify your student’s school and stay home for 5 days from the start of symptoms, or if no symptoms, the date of the positive result.
- Return to school on Day 6 if symptoms are not present or are resolving and your student/staff has a negative COVID test collected on day 5 or later. For more information about Free DPOL Testing, see dpol.net.
- On Days 6 - 10, a mask must be worn that fits snugly over the mouth and nose while indoors and when around others outside.
- If unable to test or if continues to test positive, student/staff must continue isolation. Return to school on Day 11 if symptoms (including fever) are not present.
Updates to Quarantine: Applies to students only
- If a student is a close contact/exposed at school or at home (regardless of vaccination status):
- Students without symptoms do NOT need to quarantine.
- If symptoms develop, follow the isolation guidance for positive/symptomatic individuals above (#1).
- Parents are advised to test students on day 5 after exposure. The day of exposure is day 0.
- If positive, notify your student’s school and follow the isolation guidance for positive/symptomatic individuals above (#1).
- If a student is a close contact/exposed in a sports setting (unvaccinated or has not had a previous infection with COVID-19 in the last 90 days):
- This update does not apply to sports teams.
- Stay home for 5 days starting the day after exposure.
- Return to school and activities on Day 6 if the student tests negative.
- If negative, return to normal activities (wearing a mask until day 10).
- If positive or symptomatic, refer to #1 above.
- If unable to test, the student must continue isolation. Return to school on Day 11.
- To establish proof of the previous infection the COVID test must be conducted at a testing center.
- If a student is a close contact/exposed in a sports setting and is fully vaccinated OR had a previous infection with COVID-19 in the last 90 days (must show proof of vaccination or previous infection with positive test results from a testing center):
- Students without symptoms do NOT need to quarantine.
- If symptoms develop, follow the isolation guidance for positive/symptomatic individuals above (#1).
Updates to Testing: Applies to students and staff
- CDPH has released that at-home testing, also known as over-the-counter (OTC) testing, is permitted to evaluate the status of a student or staff who is in isolation or quarantine.
- At-home testing does not apply to establish a 90-day exemption of quarantine for athletics.
